Introduction
Sher Bahadur Deuba is a trendy political leader and current prime minister of Nepal. Deuba was born on June 13th, 1946, making him 75 years old in recent days. Before this tenure, Mr. Deuba had already served as a prime minister three times.
Along with being prime minister of Nepal, Sher Bahadur Deuba has been the leading president of the political party Nepali Congress since 2016. Sher Bahadur Deuba was also the main leader behind the fall of the Kingdom in Nepal. After King Gyanendra announced a coup in Nepal, Mr. Deuba was arrested in 2005 and was only released after a year in 2006.
Sher Bahadur Deuba became prime minister for the fourth time after Supre Court ordered other political parties to make him president within 24 hours. President Bidhya Devi Bhandari appointed Mr. Deuba as the new prime minister on 12th July 2021.
Early Life, and Parents
Sher Bahadur Deuba was born in Dadeldhura in the village of Ashigram. Sher Bahadur Deuba’s father’s name is Prasad Singh Deuba, and their mother’s name is Draupadi Devi Deuba. There is not much information about Deuba’s siblings so he may be the only child of his parents.
When he was young, Deuba went to Ashigram Primary School and then later went to Mahendra High School. Sher Bahadur Deuba also went to Sitaram Higher Secondary School. For higher education, Sher Bahadur Deuba went to Tri Chandra College.
In 1990, Sher Bahadur Deuba went to London and even participated in the 1993 London revolution as well. It also provided him motivation and interest in politics and decided to pursue it.
Career
Sher Bahadur Deuba’s career began in politics in 1971 as a member of a student wing of the Nepali Congress. Deuba was the leader of the student wing for nine years till 1980. Sher Bahadur Deuba began to revolt against the Panchayat system and wanted to bring in modern concepts in Nepal. Due to this, Deuba was jailed very quickly for nine years. Sher Bahadur Deuba was released from prison in 1990 and he immediately started to become active in the revolution of 1990. He played a vital part in creating multiparty democracy and dissolving of Panchayat system. Deuba was then selected as a member of the House of Representatives and was elected from Dadeldhura.
In 1994, Mr. Deuba became the Minister of Affairs selected by then prime minister Girija Prasad Koirala. However after Girija Prasad dissolved the parliament, Sher Bahadur Deuba became the party leader of the parliament in the same year. Mr. Deuba became prime minister for the first time in 1995 after Manmohan Adhikari tried to dissolve the parliament again. He united with Rashtriya Prajatantra Party. In 1996, Deuba united with India and signed a Mahakali Treaty which became infamous as it led to the birth of the Maoists. Deuba resigned in the same year and was replaced by Lokendra Bahadur Chand.
Sher Bahadur Deuba’s second reign began in 2001 when he defeated Sushil Koirala to become a prime minister. It was after Girija Prasad Koirala resigned from the said position. Deuba also became the main candidate who went to a peace talk with Maoists and created an environment of Cease-Fire in Nepal. He became prime minister the third time after the massacre that took place in Narayinhiti Palace that took the lives of King Birendra and his family. In 2004 King Gyanendra who became the king of the royal massacre took the power of all the authority and implemented a coup d ‘etat in Nepal. Since he was the prime minister King Gyanendra held him accountable and sentenced him to prison for two years.
However, a year later in 2006, Deuba was released from prison in the order of the supreme court as King Gyanendra released all his power. Deuba joined Nepali Congress after dissolving his own party in 2007. In 2010, Sher Bahadur Deuba became the party president for the first time in his political career. Deuba became the prime minister for the fourth time in 2016 after the death of Sushil Koirala. In the election, he defeated another political leader Ram Chandra Pouldel.
Sher Bahadur Deuba became the prime minister for the fifth time after replacing K.P Oli. Oli failed to get the vote of confidence and had to resign from the post. Mr. Deuba took the post of Prime minister on 12th July 2021. Supreme Court ordered president Bidhya Devi Bhandari to take back the decision of dissolving the House of Representatives. They also ordered Bhandari to appoint Deuba to make prime minister within 28 hours which was implemented.
